Council Directive 2009/71/Euratom of 25 June 2009 establishing a Community framework for the nuclear safety of nuclear installations [OJ L 172, 02/07/2009, p. 18–22] defines basic obligations and general principles for the safety of nuclear installations in the EU while enhancing the role of national regulatory bodies. ENSREG will become the focal point of cooperation between regulators and will contribute to the continuous improvement of nuclear safety requirements, especially with respect to new reactors. International Bodies Several international expert bodies issue authoritative findings and recommendations on safety related topics. the advice provided by these bodies is an important input to the development of the IAEA safety standards and other international standards; it is frequently incorporated in national safety- related laws and regulations.
