The Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa (FNRBA) was established on 26 March 2009. The establishment of FNRBA is considered as a key milestone catalyzing the enhancement, strengthening and harmonization of radiation and nuclear safety and security regulatory infrastructure in member states and serve as effective platform for the exchange of regulatory experiences and practices among the nuclear regulatory bodies in Africa.

The purpose of FNRBA is to be instrumental to the enhancement, strengthening and harmonization of the radiation protection, nuclear safety and security regulatory infrastructure and framework among its members.

The Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa (FNRBA) Plenary Meeting was jointly opened by the Chairman of the FNRBA, the Director of the Office of Nuclear Safety and Security Coordination, the Director of the Technical Cooperation of the Division of Africa and the Chairman of the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE). The meeting highlighted the strengthening of the cooperation between the FNRBA, the African Regional Cooperative Agreement (AFRA), the AFCONE and partners such as the United States of America, the Republic of Korea, the European Commission. The Plenary approved the workplan including project proposals to improve nuclear safety

 

Practical Arrangements between IAEA and FNRBA

May 2018 in Johannesburg, South Africa: Practical Arrangements were made between the IAEA and FNRBA on May 17th, 2018. The objective of these Practical Arrangements is to set forth the framework for non-exclusive cooperation between the Parties in the area of strengthening the nuclear safety and security framework in FNRBA Member States which are IAEA Member States.

​September 2017 in IAEA, Vienna:
The Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa (FNRBA) Plenary Meeting was jointly opened by A. Simo, the Chairman of FNRBA, Mr G. Caruso, Director of the Office of Nuclear Safety and Security Coordination and Mr Neil Jarvis on behalf of the Director of the Technical Cooperation of the Division of Africa. The meeting highlighted the drafted report of project ideas proposed by FNRBA to address the challenges met by the regulatory bodies in Africa. The revised Charter was approved and will be sent to all IAEA FNRBA member states via official channels for endorsement and to get the nomination of the members of FNRBA. To cover the transition period, the Steering Committee was reconducted for one more year.

July 2017, Vienna: The second FNRBA coordination meeting took place in Vienna in July 3-5, 2017.
20 participants from the governance of FNRBA, from technical level including representatives of partners and of other regional networks consolidated the positon paper on the needs of FNRBA initiated in 2016 and to prepare a survey that will be used to set the priorities among the members of FNRBA.

The African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology (AFRA) agreement provides a framework for African Member States to intensify their collaboration through programmes and projects focused on the specific shared needs of its members. It is a formal inter-governmental agreement which entered into force in 1990.
