Waste Safety Programme

Radiation Safety 1.png

This programme of the School is a aimed at assisting participants with the drafting and revision of their countries' national regulations on waste safety and particularly the safe management of radioactive waste and decommissioning. The School provides participants with the necessary background information and knowledge on safety requirements of IAEA Safety Standards and international instruments in the field of radioactive waste management and decommissioning. The participants learn how to ensure compatibility with the requirements of the IAEA safety standards.

An independent and effective national regulatory framework is key for the safety of radioactive waste and disused sealed sources management and the decommissioning of nuclear facilities in a country. The IAEA works closely with its Member States to strengthen their regulatory authorities and regulatory functions, including helping them develop regulations for the implementation of their national laws on safety.

The School is offered to regulators of IAEA Member States who are engaged in drafting radiation safety regulations. The School builds on the existing capabilities of staff of regulatory bodies, thereby ensuring the sustainability of regulators' ability to develop and update national regulations for radiation safety.

The School has been designed as a four-segment process as follows:

Segment 1: In-country preparation

This segment is intended to provide guidance to participants in the School regarding the familiarization with key elements of their national legal and regulatory framework that they need to learn to get ready to start drafting a new or revising an existing regulation.

Segment 1 also gives advice to registered participants in the presential workshop of the School (segment 3) regarding the elaboration of the advance material to be submitted to the School organizers before the workshop.
