Advisory Service: ORPAS - Occupational Radiation Protection Advisory Service

Purpose	The Service is an IAEA  appraisal service intended to strengthen and enhance the effectiveness of the Occupational Radiation Protection at the end-user level and technical suport and scientific organizations (TSO)  of the Member States in the fields of nuclear, radiation, radioactive waste, transport safety and nuclear security. The ORPAS is carried out by comparisons against IAEA safety standards and against international standards (ISO, IEC,ANSI)
Audience	End users. Operator, Technical support and scientific organizations (TSO) and organizations providing occupational radiation protection services.
Team composition	•ORPAS Team Leader (Senior Expert on ORP from Member States ) •ORPAS Deputy Team Leader (Senior expert  from Member States); • IAEA Team Coordinator, who will be an IAEA staff member; • Depending upon the scope of the mission  the number of reviewers may vary from 5-10.  ORPAS Review Team members are recruited from Member States and may additionally include, where necessary, experts drawn from IAEA staff or other sources. • IAEA Administrative Support as appropriate.
Duration	Information Meeting and preparatory meeting (Pre-mission ): 3 to 5 days Self-Assessmentby Member States : 2 to 4 months ORPAS  Mission: 5 to 10 days ORPAS  Follow up Mission: 5 to 10 days
Expected output	• Strengthening and enhancing the effectiveness of the occupational radiation protection at facilities and activities; •  mutual sharing of information, experience feedback and insights between the reviewers and the State on issues of relevance; • greater openness and transparency of the occupational radiation protection approaches and practices • improved quality  management systems by emphasizing continuous improvement through periodic assessment of safety performance, and encouraging broader consideration and application of lessons learned from international experience and thereby enhancing safety culture; • more effective use of information and knowledge management networks to share relevant information on occuaptional radiation protection  issues among and between Member States having common interests.

Resource requirements	• IAEA Staff Member • Senior Experts on Occupational Radiation Protection from Member States. ($50,000-$100,000; depending on the duration type and scope of the mission)
Prerequisites	•Identification of the end-users and TSO to be appraised. Established Regulatory Body and• Comprehensive Self-Assessment by all end users.                                          • Comply with the ORPAS  Guidelines
